I’m a white girl who is very interested in Hispanic culture. Is that strange?
I’m a white girl of Italian heritage who absolutely adores Hispanic culture. My first CD was by Selena, I started learning Spanish in 5th grade and then took classes from 7-10th grade. I’ve always dated/been interested in Hispanic men (my current boyfriend is from Mexico), I love Latin music (especially Reggaeton), I’ve wanted to visit Puerto Rico for the longest time now, and I always find books/movies that feature Hispanic characters to be much more appealing. I’m really fascinated with the whole culture. A lot of my friends and family make fun of me. They’re always like “Jen, you’re white! Not Puerto Rican! Stop with that music!”
So I was just curious. When Hispanic people see a white girl who really takes an interest in their culture, do they think “Hey, that’s pretty cool” or “She’s white and needs to get a life.” I don’t try to pretend that I’m Hispanic, I just have a genuine interest in the culture.

I think it’s pretty cool when someone from a different ethnicity and cultural background takes an interest in your culture. I have always had a think for the Brazilian-Portuguese culture even though I am hispanic. People show you a lot of respect when you make the effort to learn more and become familiar with their ways.
